Matthew Scott

Land Use & Zoning Attorney

Experience

Matthew H. Scott is a Land Use and Zoning Attorney that focuses his practice on land development in Broward and Palm Beach Counties in the state of Florida. As a partner at the law firm of Dunay, Miskel & Backman in Boca Raton, Matt helps property owners and developers navigate municipal zoning processes and local code matters to facilitate development of land for its highest and best use.

Prior to joining Dunay, Miskel & Backman, Matt worked at the law firm of Tripp Scott in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. At Tripp Scott, Matt initially focused his practice on commercial litigation and bankruptcy matters, which gave him a keen understanding of dispute resolution and debtor-creditor relations. However, with an international politics degree from Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service, his passion and interest have always been in politics and government relations. Thus, Matt transitioned his legal focus to local government and zoning law.

Matt enjoys his work as a Zoning Attorney because it requires strategic thinking, creativity, and community engagement on a daily basis. More generally, he is passionate about his area of practice because he gets to work with a diverse community of professionals – architects, engineers, landscape architects, planners, city planners, and elected officials – that are all in their own ways striving to improve the built environment and by extension the communities in which we live.

Particular professional areas of interest for Matt are urban infill projects, mixed-use developments, projects with community opposition, affordable housing issues, and transportation and mobility innovation.

Born right outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Matt moved to Florida at a young age and grew up in Coral Springs and Fort Lauderdale. He went to high school at Saint Thomas Aquinas, college at Georgetown University, and law school at the University of Florida. Matt loves to travel and use to know how to speak Chinese. He and his wife Jade have two kids – Andi and Lincoln – and when he is not spending time with his family, he plays some golf and other sports.
